Hey Ryan. Congrats on funding your record! Yes, pre-sales is a great way to go. And I love that you chose one of them many ways to fund a record, and focused on that strategy. I've found that focus, adding a personal touch, and being confident and committed to your project (as opposed to being desperate and feeling like you're begging) by just knowing that it will happen are key to making any funding effort worth while. Best of luck this weekend!

my main problem with crowd funding sites is not the timeline or the "all or nothing" approach...but the fact that it seems like begging to me. it seems less like fan funding and more like stranger funding. there just doesn't seem to be much personal touch attached to it.
that being said...for my new album (physical release party this saturday) i put together a pre-sale bundle that cost $50. i knew, at that price point, how many i needed to sell to fund the production of the album. so i compiled a list of my closest friends, family members and fans that was twice that long.
i then sent out an email offering the bundle as an exclusive opportunity to help fund my album by getting all sorts of cool exclusive swag in return.
in the final week of the sale, i posted it to facebook and twitter telling folks there were a few exclusive super-fan presale bundles left if they were interested.
in the end, i sold almost two times what i needed to fund the album. i think there were two reasons for this. 1. it was exclusive and personal. these were my closest supporters and they knew it. 2. the bundle was worth 50 bucks. exclusive tshirt design, poster design, credit on the album, handwritten lyrics etc.
like i said before...the album release party is this saturday. so we'll see how people react to having the actual product in their hands.

I really like what you have going on here. I'm currently trying to get myself started in being a musician and am currently in college just starting to try to get myself out into the music world. This puts my worries somewhat at ease, to have a general idea of what i should keep in mind, so, thank you so very much for this.

(P.S. please excuse the website I put above its pretty new and I'm still trying to gather all of my material to put on there)
